Wallpaper Bedroom History
Since moving into the house, we’ve been time each week stripping off layers and layers of wallpaper in each room.
The steamer machine, loaned to by the Beckwiths back home in Horsham, works a treat.
The “Blue bedroom”, named as such because the current wallpaper is a vivid floral blue. This room is the last remaining one with wall paper remaining. Although a bit tedious, steaming and scraping off the paper has been also relaxing. You get into an almost zen-like state of mind.
Shedding each layer is also exciting. Of course, I’ve taken a video, which you can check out here: Wallpaper  A History of the Ages
Art Deco was revealed in the 3rd layer of wallpaper, circa 1920-30s.
Each layer is a mystery until it’s secrets are revealed. I find myself wondering
This was the 1st layer, c1860. Floral pattern overlaid on stripes.
why the owners choose that particular design. Really, each design becomes a part of the timeline of not just this house’s history, but also a timeline of interior. The designs range in time from the 2nd Empire, Art Nouveau, Art Deco and then the oh-so-chic 1970s.
Art Deco was revealed in the 3rd layer of wallpaper, circa 1920-30s.
What intrigues me most is that some of the paper designs seem quite modern, and could be bought today at any DIY shop. Yet, these styles are 100 years or older.
